Sport Aviation Publications announces a new guide to help instructors get the most out of the popular book Hang Gliding Training Manual. This book has become the standard hang gliding text world-wide because it explains all facts of learning to fly hang gliders in a complete and clear manner. Now instructors will have an even easier job using this manual in their lessons.
The instructor's guide consists of three main parts. First comes a discussion of the important points of each chapter. This material is set up so you can use it to guide your ground schools and practical lessons. In fact, with this guide, all you have to do is read the parts pointed out as essential and you have a complete ground school. In a similar manner, the main subjects to emphasize in your on-site teaching are also highlighted. Teaching becomes easier when your lessons are organized by this guide. The second part consists of a "finishing school". This is a list and discussion of 15 points that every student should know or have practiced before progressing on his or her own. These are matters not covered in many schools, but such things as knowing how to set safety limits, bad landing defense, avoiding vertigo, etc. This is a valuable teaching tool and check list for instructors who want to make sure their students continue to fly safely.
The third part consists of written tests covering each chapter of the Manual. You can give these tests to your students to check their progress and monitor their learning. These tests also help prepare the student for the USHGA rating tests (note: The Hang Gliding Training Manual also contains a study guide for passing the USHGA tests).
Today there is a greater tendency for schools to offer intermediate training. Pilots are interested in this higher level training because they want to fly with wider safety margins. Many realize the advancements in techniques and equipment require additional training to enhance the rate of learning. This instructor's guide will help an instructor or school set up an intermediate program through the material in the first two parts mentioned above. The latter chapters in the Manual cover intermediate skills and the guide helps organize this material. Part two of the instructor's guide is aimed at the intermediate pilot and can form the basis of your teaching plan.
